How Louisiana handles testing

Louisiana keeps testing and removal apart. Under state law, the company that does a mold assessment can't also do the remediation on the same property, and no one can own a stake in both. The Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors says assessments don't require a license, but anyone paid to do one has to give you a written report. Remediation is different: jobs over $7,500 need a Mold Remediation license from the LSLBC.

So if you want testing, hire an independent assessor with no ties to whoever will do the removal. Ask for a written report and what the samples will and won't tell you.

Do you actually need testing?

Often, no. The EPA says that when mold is visible, sampling usually isn't necessary, and there are no federal limits for mold or spores to compare results against. The CDC doesn't recommend routine testing either. What matters most is finding the moisture and removing the growth.
