About New Iberia
New Iberia is the parish seat and largest city of Iberia Parish, about 21 miles southeast of Lafayette on U.S. 90. It had 28,555 residents in the 2020 Census, and its main ZIP code is 70560.
In 1779, about 500 settlers from Málaga, Spain, led by Francisco Bouligny, came up Bayou Teche and settled near Spanish Lake. They named the town Nueva Iberia after their homeland. The bayou still curves past downtown and Shadows-on-the-Teche, the 1834 brick house on East Main Street that is now a National Historic Landmark. Avery Island and its salt dome sit just to the southwest.
The housing here is older than in the newer suburbs near Lafayette. Census estimates put the median home's construction year at 1975, and about 3 in 10 homes were built before 1960. Older houses tend to have decades of roof patches, plumbing repairs and crawl space moisture behind them.
Why New Iberia homes deal with mold and water
Storm surge from the Gulf. The National Weather Service says Hurricane Ike pushed a 7- to 9-foot storm surge into Iberia Parish in September 2008, about the same as Hurricane Rita in 2005. It flooded homes and businesses along and south of Highway 14 and U.S. 90, including around the Port of New Iberia, and more than 1,000 homes in the parish took water. If floodwater came inside, start with flood cleanup.
Wind damage that lets the rain in. On Dec. 14, 2022, an EF-2 tornado with estimated peak winds of 135 mph tracked along the southeast edge of the city. The NWS damage survey found heavy damage to homes along Bayou Boulevard, Avenue Bonne Terre and Old Jeanerette Road. When a roof is damaged, rain can soak attic insulation and decking before repairs are done, and anything closed up before it dried can still hide mold. See attic mold remediation.
Older homes and crawl spaces. In houses raised on piers, ground moisture works up into the joists and subfloor, especially when the vapor barrier is torn or missing. Learn more about crawl space mold removal.
Rain in every season. Acadiana Regional Airport in New Iberia averages about 60 inches of rain a year, and June through August are the wettest months. The EPA recommends drying wet materials within 24 to 48 hours. If water is coming in right now, go to water damage and emergency water extraction.

New Iberia FAQ
Do you serve homes outside New Iberia city limits, like Loreauville or Jeanerette?
Call and tell us your address. Local pros in the area work across Iberia Parish and the greater Lafayette area.
Our roof was repaired after the 2022 tornado. Could there still be mold in the attic?
Possibly. A new roof stops new leaks, but it doesn't dry out insulation or clean decking that got wet before the repair. Stains, a musty attic smell or damp insulation are worth a look.
Our older house smells musty every summer. Is that mold?
It could be. A smell that gets stronger on humid days or when the AC kicks on often points to moisture under the floor or inside a wall. The walkthrough is free, and your local pro will look for the source.
How much does mold remediation cost in New Iberia?
It depends on the size and location of the problem. The walkthrough and quote are free. See every service on our homepage.
